Pistons and Quench

One thing to consider with the camaro pistons on a 3400 engine is the quench distance.  Quench is the "squish" you give the air/fuel mixture with the piston as it approaches the cylinder head.  You need enough room to allow the rods to stretch (the piston travels well over 3000 feet per second at 5500 RPM!) and optimal quench is around .035-.045 depending on the max RPM you will see.  7000 RPM should run more quench distance than an engine that will only see 6000 RPM.  Stock 3400 is .040" and 7000 RPM hasn't made the pistons kiss the heads, but the peak RPM is not known yet for this quench distance.

Using stock 3400 head gaskets with camaro pistons is ~.070".  You can run the camaro head gasket, but then you are close to .050" and compression goes up to 13.3:1 on 3400 heads and 12.35:1 with 3500 heads.  With the right supporting mods and premium fuel at least, this setup will still work well.
